What’s Good in the Music Scene? #32 – Adam Deitch & Borahm Lee (Break Science)

Adam and Borahm, thanks for speaking with us today about Break Science!

Q1: How did Break Science come to be and were did the name come from?

We met and had a similar vision to make well made EDM.  Break = drum breaks.  Science = break manipulation and sonic experimentation.

Q2: Who are some of your musical influences?

From DJ Premier to Squarepusher.  From Miles Davis to Flosstradamus.

Q3: When did you both realize that music was a calling you wanted to pursue?

We both knew early on in childhood that music was it for us.

Q4: How do the two of you go about writing a new track as Break Science?

One of us starts an idea, then both of us finish it.

Q5: What did you take away from this year’s Catskill Chill Music Festival?

We had a lot of fun at the Chill!

Q6: Adam, when performing live as Break Science, do you have a set pattern when playing certain songs on the drums or do you improvise on stage the entire time?

It’s improvised and different every night.

Q7: Are there plans for a new album in the near future?

It’s being mixed right now!  Full length record!

Q8: What did you take away from your performance at the Made in America Tour at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC back in September with Big Gigantic?

Maybe our best NYC show ever.  And the after party was great too!

Q9: Having released your last two projects as free downloads via Pretty Lights Music, you guys clearly support free distribution of music.  Why did you choose to release your music in that way, as opposed to selling it as a standard album?

We wanted to be heard by the real fans of this music.  And the real fans are used to getting quality electronic stuff for free.  And we’re built to be seen live.

Q10: How do you go about naming a new song?

The names just come to us.

Q11: What have been some of your favorite memories from previous performances?  Any favorite festivals that you love to play?

Electric Forest and Bear Creek!

Q12: What does the future hold for Break Science?

Complete focus and better production, both sonically and visually.

Q13: If you could pick any festival in the world to headline, which would it be?

Probably Electric Forest, or Fuji Rock.

Q14: With both of you participating in various music projects all the time, how difficult is it keeping up with Break Science and being able to perform year-round?

We have phased out our other projects to allow Break Science to be a focus.

Q15: What other musical groups are you involved with and how do they influence the music made by Break Science?

We’ve played with everybody from Lee Scratch Perry to Lettuce, and it ALL is an influence musically.

Q16: Individually, what does Break Science mean to you and what separates Break Science from the other bands you perform with?

Break Science is our focus and the hours spent crafting the music are worth it when it hits people’s ears for the first time.

Adam and Borahm, thanks again for taking the time to speak with us today about Break Science!  We look forward to seeing you again soon and the release of your new full length album!  We wish you guys nothing but the best!
